Kob Koon Krup (“Thank-you” in Thai)

posted May 30, 2011, 8:39 AM by Alex Barcados   [ updated Jun 7, 2011, 7:36 AM ]

Greetings from Thailand – “the Land of Smiles”.  King Bhumibol Adulyadej or King Rama IX, is greatly revered by Thais.  People are very concerned by his fragile health, but it is not readily discussed here out of respect for the King.

The demand for gemstones in India and China is driving much of the activity in the gemstone market.  Prices are strong, but it also means that more material is being cut and there are more goods to choose from.  I have worked hard to find fantastic gemstones I know you will like.  I’m particularly happy with the yellow, pink, and blue sapphires, and the rubies I’ve purchased.

We are committed to being your coloured gemstone supplier of choice by offering superior value, service, expertise and integrity.

That was what I wrote in my postcards I sent from Thailand in late February.  Since then prices for coloured gemstones have continued to strengthen, and I am glad that I purchased as much as I did when I was there. The political tension continues to bubble under the surface in Thailand, and could erupt again in July when a national election is scheduled.

Please don't hesitate to contact us if  you would like to see some of the gorgeous rubies and sapphires I brought back from Thailand this trip.

Best regards,

Alex now Past-Chairman

As of August 8th Alex is the Past-Chairman of the Canadian Jewellers Association.  This means that he has one more year on the CJA Board of Directors. Alex sent a letter to CJA members letting them know some of the accomplishments of the past year, and he ended it with "The CJA Office, of Maria Garcia (Education Coordinator), Heather Resnick (Manager, Association Services), and Ken Mulhall (President & CEO), deserve the thanks of all CJA members.  They are hard working and dedicated, and make all the things the CJA does, possible. I would also like to thank the Board of Directors, Executive and CJA members for their support during my term.  I have thoroughly enjoyed my term as Chairman, and I have found it to be a rewarding experience.  I encourage all CJA members to become involved in their Association. "  The entire letter is available for reading in the Downloads sections of this website.

We're Expanding

We've expanded our office by taking over space next to us.  We also completely changed the office layout.  We have a new enterance, new laminate wood floor, and a lot more Northern daylight coming into the office.  All this will allow us to continue to grow and to serve you better.  It's been a little challenging working the last few weeks (we were only closed one day) during the renovations, but we are almost done unpacking.  Please stop and take a look at the office when you get a chance.

Sawasdee krub - "hello" in Thai.
There is still some softness in the gemstone market here in Thailand.  The grenade in the bank last week in the gem district in Bangkok hasn't helped the mood.  There are not many buyers like me here - ones that pay right away.  The cutting factories I deal directly with are keen to do business.  I have been able to buy sapphires and rubies at fantastic prices. I have also purchased a production of zircons that I excited to show, along with some other great gemstones.
